Rana Hajjeh, MD
Dr. Hajjeh is currently Project Director for the newly formed Hib Initiative, a team of professionals from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, the CDC, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and WHO whose aim is to reduce childhood meningitis and pneumonia through sustained use of Hib vaccine. Dr. Hajjeh is responsible for leading team planning day-to-day activities to achieve the objectives of the 4-year project made possible through a $37 million grant from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI).
Prior to joining the Hib Initiative, Dr. Hajjeh headed up the Disease Surveillance Program at the Navy Medical Research Unit 3 (NAMRU-3), where she was assigned by CDC. While at NAMRU -3 , she worked on implementing a network for bacterial meningitis surveillance in the Eastern Mediterranean region, in collaboration with WHO/EMRO and country ministries of health. She has written extensively and lectured on a variety of topics concerning epidemiology of various infectious diseases .
Dr. Hajjeh graduated with a B.S. in Biology and Medical Degree from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon , and did her medical training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Emory Univ., Atlanta, GA and Epidemic Intelligence Service training at CDC. She is fully proficient in Arabic, French and English. She currently resides in Atlanta with her husband and two children.
