Hib Vaccine Could Reduce Major Childhood Diseases
Hib disease annually causes an estimated 3 million cases of serious illness and 400,000 deaths. But despite the availability of financing for Hib vaccination, writes Lois Privor-Dunn of the Hib Initiative at Johns Hopkins University, most countries have not introduced the vaccine, leaving three-quarters of the world's children at risk. see http://www.prb.org/HIB

A new global focus, the Hib Initiative, is supporting country efforts to take evidence-informed decisions regarding the use of Hib vaccine.

  • The Hib Initiative unites experts from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization

  • The Initiative is supported by a $37 million, 4-year grant from GAVI/The Vaccine Fund

  • To achieve their goal of reducing childhood death and disability, the Initiative has adopted a collaborative, country-driven approach

  • The Hib Initiative aims to guide countries in making informed decisions regarding introduction or continuation of Hib vaccine programs in the context of other health priorities
